Is there a print run of physical books, and if so, who pays for them?

Nov 12, 9:56PM EST0

Hi Jesa

I dotn act as a publisher, so I dotn choose how you publish your book.

I provide design and publishign assistance. I help auhtors get their books ready for publishing.

If you use a print on demand service, like Amazon Createspace, you wont pay for physical books, but you wont have copies of the book unless you buy them yourself. Besides the profit margin is much lower.

My advice is to publish through createspace, and at the same time order a small print run of the book. You can easily get some good prices for 40/50 books, that will allow you t do some local events and presentations.

This events usualy work very well and are a great start for the book launch.

How long does someone have to write the book?

Nov 12, 5:14AM EST0

Hi. I already reply to a question that is essentialy the same so if you dont mind I will past the reply here.

"If you follow perfection you might loose yourself and never finish the book, if you go with the first thing you have, well, it might not be that good...My advice is to find a middle term. Dont publish the day after you complete the book. I'm sure if you wait a couple of weeks and do a full reading you will want to do some revision or changes. Also, never publish a book without being edited, or at least proofread. I know many authors try to do this themself to save money, but its not the same. The author  already has an emotinonal conection to the story, and because of the time spent writting it, can even miss some typos. So I advice to hire a professional to do so. If you dont have a budget to do that, at least pass your book to a couple of friends and family that you trust and know are good with literature."

How can I measure the company’s reputation?

Nov 12, 1:09AM EST0

Hi Katerina

I think you can measure a company reputation by looking at the work the company has done and its quality. You can eventualy contact some previous clients or look for clients reviews.

Do you have DRM (Digital Rights Management) Protections?

Nov 11, 4:32PM EST0

Hi.

I dont have because thats a publisher responsability. For example if you use Createspace you will benefit from  their system. Alhtough all systems ara crackable, and if a bilion dollars insdutry like hollywood cant stop digital piracy I doubt anyone can.

How much creative control will you have over the look of a book?

Nov 11, 12:12PM EST0

Hi Faye

Usualy I work with the authors in order to establish what they want.

I ask them to complete a cover form that will give me a good idea of what the auhtor wants, and than I will deliver some mockups (skecthes).

The auhtor will choose one of the mokcups and we develop the cover based on that, with the author following the development and being able to request revisions or changes.

What is the timeline for publication?

Nov 11, 10:09AM EST0

Hi Vlatkojankov

I guess it will depend on a number of things.

Usualy if I'm doing all the publishing services (cover, editing, format and promotional material) it takes me about 20-30 days to deliver. Than theres the actual publishing, that will depend on how you choose to do it. Createspace will take about 2 or 3 days between the set up, upload and acception of the files.

How long does the manuscript have to be? Is there a minimum?

Nov 11, 6:23AM EST0

Hi Tamara.

There is no minimum for a script. The story goes as the author think it needs to go.

What will happen is the category the book will be: Short Story, Novelette, Novella, or Novel.

The most important difference between a short story, novelette, novella, and a novel is the word count. Usualy the numbers go y:

Short Stories: 3,500 - 7,500

Novellettes: 7,500 - 17,000

Novellas: 17,000 - 40,000

Novels: 40,000 + words

Please have in mind that print on demand plataforms, such as createspace only allow to print book with a minimum pages, due to their print systems, in this case you can publish a book with just one short story, you would have to collect at least 2 or 3.

Printing local you can publish a short story, it will be a very small book, but its not unusual.

How do I know I'm ready to publish?

Nov 11, 5:30AM EST0

Thats a good question and one that surely hunts most authors.

If you follow perfection you might loose yourself and never finish the book, if you go with the first thing you have, well, it might not be that good...

My advice is to find a middle term. Dont publish the day after you complete the book. I'm sure if you wait a couple of weeks and do a full reading you will want to do some revision or changes.

Also, never publish a book without being edited, or at least proofread. I know many authors try to do this themself to save money, but its not the same. If you dont have a budget to do that, at least pass your book to a couple of friends and family that you trust and know are good with literature.

What is the impact of a book cover on the book success?

Nov 11, 5:28AM EST0

Hi Sara

The impact that a cover has on the book is huge. Its what sets the difference between a bad and good publishing. Specialy if you're doing a self-publishing, its crucial to have your book well designed, so you can pass the message that you did a self publishing by choice, not because no one publish your book,

A good cover design doesnt have necessarily to be complex and full of elements, sometimes its as hard to make a simple and clean design than a comlex one. What it must have is a connection to the story, to the audience, a good balance and layout, a singular look and abova all, good redibility in all format (paperback, ebook and thumbnail)

Hi Joseph

Thansk for the question.

I believe I do. I helped publihsing over 100 books. Developing book cover design, format, pormotional material, etc.

I also advice my client, when asked to, on the best publishing options, book sizes, printing options, marketing strategies, etc.

What will you do to market your book?

Nov 10, 7:52PM EST0

Hi Brittany.

Thanks for the question.

I dont actually market the book, since I am not an author or a publisher.

What I do is develop design and publishing assistance services.

On the marketing part I offer a vast pormotional material options, that will help you make a great book presentation, causing more impact on social media and groups.

This options go from a simple teaser image, to social media banners, posters, book trailers, etc.

This will comliment your book presentation, but the acutal marketing must be developed by the author.

I alwasy suggest to do a number of things:

1- promote on social media . Raise your facebook network. Promote on specifc facebook groups (writting, author, book related groups). Be active on instagram, not only showing the cover and pormo images, but also posting photos/images that can relate to your book, and add a link or hashtag.

2 - Directly contact people on facebook, specialy readers and reviewers

3 -  set a mailing list with all your contacts and send an email promoting your book

(please note that emails and message should be done with moderation, if you over do it it can backlash)

4 - dont forget that a its easier to start localy and small, than to start big and worlwide. Do some book local book presentations. Any library, book shop or coffe should agree on doing this with you, and it much easier to start selling a few copies this way. Invite friends family and neighboors and grow from town to town

5 - look for events or book clubs where you can present your books

And this are my 5 initial suggestions. if all goes well other otpions and invitations will start coming.

Do I have to pay in advance for production costs?

Nov 10, 4:31PM EST0

Hi Diana

The publishing process has a huge number of options and steps to follow.

The production costs is considered the printing and delivery of your book. If you choose a print on demand plataform, like Createspace or Ingram, you wont need to pay in advance for production, those companies will produce each book as orders arrive, but your profit margin will be consoderably low. The alternative is to print the book in local printer, and sell them through the traditional and online mediums, including amazon, but in this case you need to pay in advance for printing and the cost per book will only be good if you make a large order (over 100 books).

As for my services (book cover design, editing, interior format, pormotional design , etc.), I charge 50% to start working, and the remainign 50% upon delivery. - This investment is made in advance (before you actualy publish your book), but the presentation of the book (cover, promotion, etc) and a well edited and formated book is crucial to achieve success. - Its usualy said that you shouldnt judge a book by its cover, wich is true, but its also true that a great design will instantly atract more viewers and pass a positive message to the audience that although your an indie author, you took the time and effort to put the best book possible, and is has good as any house published book.

I have a vast range of prices and options for the book design services.
